Embracing Minimal Spaces: A Path to Sustainable Cities
Spaces are said to be minimal when they are uncluttered and contain the essentials for their habitation. Minimal spaces refer to intentionally curated spaces such as homes, rooms, offices, and even playgrounds that avoid excessive ornamentations or decorations but rather focus on simple decorative and often ‘green’ designs. These designs prioritize functionality and sustainability, creating environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally friendly.

Minimal Spaces and the SDGs
In 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs were adopted by the UN, including SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. This goal aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Achieving SDG 11 has a ripple effect, positively impacting other goals, particularly SDG 13: Climate Action, which addresses urgent measures to combat climate change.
The SDG 11, which refers to the building and maintaining of sustainable cities and communities, positively impacts SDG 13; Climate action, which is an urgent need in our society: A state of emergency as it stands. According to the UNDP, climate action "means stepped-up efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-induced impacts.” The issue of climate action cannot be tackled alone by one organization or nation but can only be achieved by the collaboration and determination of us all. Hence, this is an open invitation to invest in environmental conservation, refusing to leave the world depleted but rather better than we found it.

Minimal spaces contribute significantly to this effort by reducing the environmental impact of construction and urban living. Often, constructions involve the use of many materials, some of which are non-biodegradable or contain greenhouse gases. However, minimalism intentionally curbs this wastage by introducing green spaces and using eco-friendly materials. These materials are sustainable, often recycled, and have a lower carbon footprint, contributing to a healthier planet.
By embracing minimal spaces, we can create urban environments that are more efficient and sustainable. These spaces use fewer resources, generate less waste, and promote a lifestyle that values quality over quantity. This approach not only helps in achieving SDG 11 and SDG 13 but also fosters a culture of sustainability that can inspire future generations.

In conclusion, minimal spaces offer a viable solution for building sustainable cities. They align with the principles of SDG 11 and contribute to climate action, making them an essential component of our efforts to create a more sustainable and resilient world.
